The Method
How the First Letters method works
A simple, proven process that makes memorization accessible to everyone — even if you’ve struggled before.
Prepare your heart
Spend time in prayer and ask God to prepare your heart to receive His words. Choose your Bible translation and decide what to memorize.
Write it out
Write your entire scripture passage. Say each verse 4–5 times out loud as you write. The act of writing engraves it in your memory.
Learn the First Letters
Write just the first letter of each word. Use these letters as prompts to recite the verse. Your brain fills in the rest naturally.
Recite and meditate
Continue saying each verse out loud and meditate on its meaning. Ask the Lord to help you recall it. The Word goes deep when you linger.

Remember the Word began as a simple question: what if you suddenly had no access to God’s Word? Would you remember what it says?
That question led Brandie Van Pelt — a designer and lifelong student of Scripture — to create a memorization system built around the First Letters method: a highly effective technique where you use just the first letter of each word as a memory prompt. It bridges the gap between reading a verse and truly owning it in your heart.
